Fiano is an indigenous varietal to the Sannio region, a sub-region within Campania, Southern Italy. It grows on volcanic soils and grapes have high sugar content hence its ancient name, “Vitis Apiana" – vine of the bees. The sweeter bunches are used to make sparkling wines consumed locally, whereas the bulk of production is vinified into dry wines. Fontanavecchia Sannio Fiano DOC is as authentic a Fiano can be, definitely one of the best expressions of this fascinating ancient grape varietal.
Fontanavecchia is a family owned winery located at the foothills of Taburno mastiff, in Campania, southern Italy. The broader area is called Sannio Beneventano, home to some of the most interesting southern Italian indigenous grape varietals: Aglianico, Fiano, and Falanghina del Taburno. Fontanavecchia owners, Orazio Rillo and Libero Rillo, through their incessant work and indomitable passion, have established themselves among the region’s top producers.
