Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, or simply Refosco, is a grape varietal native to Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Northern Italy. Even though Italians have enjoyed the wines made with this ancient grape for centuries, it is only in recent years that Refosco started to make its way into the American market. Of all the Refosco wines currently imported, Colutta’s is definitely among the top ones: it’s made right in the heart of Refosco’s wine growing region – the DOC Colli Orientali del Friuli.
Colutta winery is located in Manzano, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Northern Italy. Wine production started in 1968, with the first batches of Tocai – later renamed Friulano – and Merlot. It is in 1998 that the new era of Colutta began, after Giorgio Colutta, nephew of founder Antonio Colutta, took over. Colutta has become one of the area’s household names, garnering awards not only for its wines but also for their eco-friendly approach to viticulture and winemaking. Colutta re-uses rainwater, uses pruning residuals for heating, solar panels are its main energy source and utilizes recycled materials for packaging – corks, paper, cardboard.
