Zinfandel, Primitivo or Crljenak Kaštelanski?

Italian red wine Primitivo grapes Apulia Southern ItalyZinfandel – often referred to as "Zin" – is one the most famous and beloved Californian red wines. Zinfandel grapes were once thought to be native to California. Some Zinfandel vineyards, in fact, are undoubtedly among the oldest in the country. The Original Grandpere Vineyard in the Sierra Foothills is 143 years old!

But Zinfandel, called Primitivo in Italy, has even more ancient origins: it descends from the Croatian grape varietal Crljenak Kaštelanski (I know, you totally hurt yourself trying to pronounce that!). While we unfortunately do not sell any Crljenak Kaštelanski on WineBee.com, we do have plenty of Primitivo from Apulia region -  the “heel” of Italy.

Our 100% Primitivo “Quota 31”, from the winery Mehir Salento is simply delicious – and one of our bestsellers. It is so easy to drink that it literally disappears from the bottle like it’s some kind of magic.
